Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL)
The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) commissions GIZ to carry out projects in the areas of agricultural productivity, sustainable production and global food security.
GIZ implements numerous international projects on behalf of the Ministry. Among several initiatives being undertaken as part of a bilateral cooperation programme, a project is being implemented in Ethiopia to boost agricultural productivity and work is being done in Côte d’Ivoire to support sustainable cocoa production. Moreover, a number of global projects are under way, including one to promote sustainably produced palm oil in Germany, which sees GIZ working closely with commercial enterprises and non-governmental organisations.
GIZ assists BMEL in implementing projects focusing on global food security under the German Government’s Bilateral Trust Fund with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and also works on the Ministry’s behalf to address international forest policy issues and sustainable forest management in China.
At the technical level, BMEL and GIZ regularly engage in dialogue on the topics of global food security, sustainable resource management and agricultural research. They also cooperate closely on preparations for the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA), which takes place as part of International Green Week in Berlin.
