Title: Vocational education and training Institute - VETI, Al Ain and Al Gharbia
Commissioned by: Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC)
Financier: Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC)
Country: United Arab Emirates
Overall term: September 2008 to July 2011
The United Arab Emirates is currently raising its efforts to promote vocational education and training. As there is a shortage of qualified staff in many technical fields, the government has decided to prepare the national labour market so that it is better able to face future challenges. The Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) has responded to the move by setting up vocational education and training institutes (VETI) at two locations in the Abu Dhabi Emirate. Thanks to its extensive experience in the field of vocational education, GIZ International Services was awarded the contract to manage these institutes for three years.
Young citizens of the UAE are trained to meet the needs of the labour market and can thus perform effectively as part of the national workforce.
One of the key strengths of the hands-on approach to vocational education and training taken by the project is that it ensures the readiness of the graduates to enter employment. All the curricula developed for the institutes stipulate the inclusion of practical work experience, in the same way as the German dual system, which is widely acclaimed around the world.
The institutes provide UAE students with a wide range of diplomas in four vocational fields: information technology, design and applied management, industrial technology, and medical and health care. Teaching and qualification for the diplomas are carried out to the same standards as for German in vocational education.
GIZ provides the following services to guarantee the quality of the institutes’ operations:
- Management of the institutes and creation of a good educational environment
- Recruitment of professional teaching staff for each of the institutes' specialisations
- Establishment of various vocational training courses, responding to current market needs
- Development of curricula based on German vocational education and industry standards.
